Background

Suleyman Shah was a military commander during the Seljuk period. He migrated to Anatolia to escape from the Mongol Invasions. Later his son Ertugrul Ghazi became the leader of the Kayi tribe and fought for the survival of his tribe. He struggled very hard to find a separate homeland for his people. All his efforts and leadership have been shown in a Turkish season named Ressurection Dirilis Ertugrul (Click Here to watch all seasons). He provided a firm base for the foundation of the Ottoman Empire. Later his son Osman Ghazi turns this into reality and established the empire which lasted for the next 6 centuries. A new season named “Kurulus Osman (Establishments of Osman)” is now coming with full zest from 20th November 2019. Ertugrul Ghazi was buried in Sogut, Turkey. It has great historical value. People from the whole world come to visit this tomb. So, here is the complete information about the tomb and its travel guide.

Tomb of Ertugrul Ghazi

It is located in the province of Bilecik. Before the Turkish conquest, it was known as Thebasion. Sultan Alaaddin Keykubat I handed over these lands to Ertugrul in 1231, who was the head of one of the Seljuk Turks’ tribes. Ertugrul descended from the Kayi tribe that had taken Anatolia between the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. Ertugrul sanctuary, The tomb was ordered to be built by the Sultan Mehmed the Conqueror in the 15th century, restored by order of Sultan Mustafa III in 1737, Repaired again during the reign of Sultan Abdulhamid II  in the 19th century. During these repairs, two fountains were built at the entrance of the cemetery. The description of the fountain indicates in which the sultanate the tomb was repaired. The grave is hexagonal. The walls are made of a row of stones, Two rows of bricks and a vertical union between the stones. On the outside of the mausoleum are several graves like Halime Hatun, wife of Ertugrul Gazi. There are also family graves. Tombs of his brothers in arms, Ertugrul’s first son Gunduz Bey, Ertugrul’s second son Oglu Savci Bey. Turgut Alp’s grave which is present there also, is an honorary one as Turgut is buried in Turgutalp village. Honor and glory to Ertugrul. Awards from neighboring countries are also present there in the Mausoleum.  Tent Kayi outside the Mausoleum in the courtyard. Every Kayi woman should have her dagger. Guards are changed after every hour.

Sogut

Sogut is located in the North-West of Turkey and it takes two to three hours of driving from Istanbul. Both Sogut and then Ertugrul Ghazi Tomb are cleared placed means easily traceable. You can even drive yourself to reach there and no need of hiring a driver.
