Who was Savci Bey / Saru Batu Savci Bey
Savci Bey was the second son of Ertugrul Ghazi and Hayme Ana Hatun (Halime Hatun). Savci Bey was the younger brother of Gunduz Bey or Gunduz Alp and the elder brother of Osman Ghazi who later became the founder of the Ottoman Empire. So there isn’t any information available about his birth and early life. But it can be estimated that Savci Bey was born in between 1199 and 1259 CE.
According to some resources, as we also have seen in Dirilis Ertugrul Season, Savci Bey was a man interested in Science & Technology. Savci Bey was of the opinion that a state can be a dominion by knowledge and reason instead of by using sword. Savci Bey didn’t like to dress up like a warrior and go to war field. Savci Bey was a great thinker rather than an Alp. In the season, Savci Bey has been shown to spend most of the time with Artuk Bey just to show his interest in science. Savci Bey wasn’t seen much in Dirilis Ertugrul Season 5 because of the same reason.
In spite of having no interest in wars, martyrdom was his pre-destined fortune. Savci Bey was martyred in the Battle at Ekizce (Domaniç Pass) in 1287 CE during the attack of Byzantine Commander Kalanoz [Tevarih-i Al-i Osman / İbni Kemal Paşazade]. After his martyrdom, Savci Bey lived in the hearts of the Kayis even till today. A lot of poems have been written dedicated to him. His martyrdom commemoration is held every year in the month of August at his memorial in Karaköy. The previous year (2019) marked the 732nd anniversary of Savci Bey’s martyrdom.
According to resources, Savci Bey was married to Ana Sultan (Kutlu Melek). Both of them gave birth to two sons named Süleyman Bey and Bayhoca. Bayhoce was martyred in an ambush. They also have a granddaughter Hatice Sultan from their son Süleyman Bey. [Tevarih-i Al-i Osman / İbni Kemal Paşazade].
