So, I have gathered some information about Dundar Bey like who was Dundar Bey? What was his role in the establishment of the Ottoman Empire? How long he lead the Kayi Tribe? When Dundar Bey died? Where Dundar Bey’s tomb is located? So, here is curious information.

Who was Dundar Bey?

Suleyman Shah was the head of the Kayi Tribe. Süleyman Şah and his wife Hayme Hatun Ana gave birth to four children named Sungurtekin Bey, Ertuğrul Gazi, Dundar Bey, and Gündoğdu Bey. Dundar Bey was the youngest of all. Dundar Bey was born in 1210 CE but birthplace is yet unknown. Dundar Bey was the younger brother of Ertugrul so Paternal Uncle of Osman Ghazi. Dundar Bey was also a renowned and brave warrior and got the title of Ghazi like other members of his family. Dundar Bey was also loyal to his elder brother Ertugrul Ghazi as the leader of Kayi Tribe after the death of Suleyman Shah. Dundar Bey devoted his whole life to the Kayi Tribe and his nation.

But on the other side, Dundar Bey was a person easily swayed having a weak personality that resulted in many mistakes. Often times, when Ertugrul was on a campaign, Dundar Bey performed as the leader of the Tribe. After the death of Ertugrul Ghazi, the Kayis and the other neighboring tribes were restless. Dundar Bey was desirous of their unity and was also interested to become the next leader of the Kayi Tribe. So, he called himself as a candidate to be the next leader. Dundar Bey supported his candidacy with the reasons that he was senior in age as well as experiences gained under the leadership of Ertugrul Ghazi.

Destiny was not towards Dundar Bey’s side, so Osman Ghazi the son of Ertugrul Ghazi became the next leader of the Kayi Tribe. Osman Ghazi was elected by the Kayis because of his commendable strategy and morality. After becoming the next leader, he was also the Bey of Bithinya Principality.  At that time, Dundar Bey completely supported his nephew and also said that it was his predestined fortune. [Ibn Kemal: Kemalpaşazade Tarih-i]

Later, it has been reported that Dundar Bey was against Osman Ghazi in some decisions and there reopened a gap between both of them. Some historians wrote that Dundar Bey was killed by Osman Ghazi because he rebelled against him while Osman Ghazi was attacking a Greek Tribe. It has even been called a rumor. But most of the historians and also the prominent ones are not of this opinion. But it has been reported that Dundar Bey died in 1298 CE. Dundar Bey was also a married person. And it can even be assumed that he might have had children but no information is available about these like when he got married and what were their names etc.

  1. I have been watching several seasons of Resurrection Ertugrul on Netflix in the United States and find the series fascinating, if a little hyperbolic. It certainly has piqued my interest in this area of history which is almost entirely new to me. Thanks for the additional information and keep up the good
    work!
